Mariana’s cute and colorful creatures are landing in the page of Greek street art – Talks to fill it with colors and optimism. Strictly for color lovers, children or those who feel like children …
Have you studied something in relation to visual arts and what are your most important influences?
Yes, I studied visual art, but I only discovered my style when I let myself free, to create whatever popped in my head! I love studying and I’ll always be delighted by museums, workshops, lectures and whatever has to do with arts. I will never stop being schoolgirl and studying! My main influence is our time, from 80s until today. Mascots, comix, advertising, Candy Candy, the Simpsons, and of course the Japanese kawaii trend, with simple, clean shapes and cute animals! A famous representative of this trend is the Hello Kitty.
Have you grown up in the city center? What opinion do you have for the urban way of life?
I grew up in Corinth, In an urban style, but Into the nature, next to the sea. I adore only major cities where arts and cultural events flourish and thrive. I stood very lucky that Corinth is next to Athens and thus I was always coming to enjoy what province couldn’t provide me. For many years now I live in Athens with my cats and it’s my favorite city in all the land.
How did you decide to go out on the streets and which was the need it fulfilled that wasn’t until then covered?
The heroes of my fiction asked me to go on the road to interact with real people. And so I acted! It was pleasant and easy, and since the street art was already a trend I simply “walked” in it.
Your job in the streets is more installations and less in walls, why did you choose something like that? Are you more impressed by the 3D art?
I wanted the characters to be as alive as possible and normally penetrate to reality. Street enabled them to escape from paper and become three-dimensional. I like playing with the sizes and dimensions and so I initially make my characters in miniature paper.
What’s the style of your work? Is there a story among your heroes? Any magical properties / strengths?
Heroes – facilities are messengers of joy and positive energy. They appear in the middle of nowhere to make people laugh and cheer them up. They all come from almost the same place and some from other stories. Their stories are sometimes connected and sometimes they are not related at all. Their message is always positive.
There is something childish on your drawings but the same time absolute and precise, It’s not a free hand job. Tell us more about the steps of your process and your working materials.
Every day I sketch on coloring books what I think. After I make the stories in collages, miniatures, videos, acrylics and in whatever I like. When the hero goes out on the street, it already has a history and various small and large objects to recount it. Thus it can be easily captured on any surface with emulsion paints, sprays, strips and stencils for its characteristics.
Collaborations that pleased you? And name the Greeks you haven’t worked with but you would want to.
It was a pleasure to paint in street with ANTIO’S, we matched perfectly! Also my collaboration with artistic platform Artaz which spawned the characters I love the most, giant sunscreen – mascot adorning Mykonos hotel. I would love to paint with the Arg. Ser, but also with my friends who design clothes like Teever.
Is art an expensive sport as they say? Not only for those who create but also for the prospective buyers.
It’s not an expensive sport, since it definitely costs less than the material goods that modern societies require. Creating a painting, makes you forget to eat, go for coffee, to spruce up, so your money remain for all colors!
If someone comes to a conclusion from your visual art, your daily life is colorful and cheerful. How right is that?
It’s cheerful like me since I live in this beautiful country with me kittens and we share peace
In ten years from now…
I dream to write books for children, draw, live in Athens and get 3 more kittens!
